Donald Trump has taken to the stage in North Carolina to do some campaign grinding, however much attention his speech there might otherwise have been drawing. The last time he addressed the audience there he told them their state was now going to “get a special place” in hell. As the state prepares to vote for him, he’s likely to need to turn his fire on Clinton. As Trump reflected on his legacy, Clinton and her supporters were certainly listening.
The Democrats’ latest attack ad against Trump seems to repeat several of the points from the same video clip shown last week, although it does so with a new logo for the Clinton campaign. (The text on the new version differs from the one seen in the previous ad.) The ad features Hillary Clinton repeating her claim that half of Trump’s supporters consist of a “basket of deplorables” — a claim she has made before, though it’s one that has at this point been disproved by extensive polling, as detailed in a PolitiFact column published earlier this month. The campaign also repeats her remarks that she’s “not taking anything for granted” in November, and tries to work in a line about having done hard work herself. There are no new remarks, however, about the “s-word” itself, and indeed the video in the ad focuses on Hillary’s contention that she’s an admirable, principled woman.
The ad was meant to be circulated ahead of an election that saw anti-Trump ads appearing on popular YouTube videos, where such ads are typically considered unacceptable.
The “basket of deplorables” remark was not unexpected by the campaign. It was first picked up by New York Magazine a few weeks ago, and indeed it’s been well-documented that the remark received a large audience in a Facebook poll taken in May. Trump himself has been bragging on stage and online about the remark being a success, and repeated it often on Sunday morning talk shows. One of his campaign
