SORTXL will sort large ASCII files – faster than SORT.EXE (WIN9x) – and runs on any PC with DOS 3.3 or better.
Up to 8 sort criteria (fields) may be specified, each ascending or descending. This makes it easy to sort by date MM/DD/YYYY, for example, in a single pass. Case ignored, special characters handled according to DOS sort table.

USAOnly the finest grocery-delivery services in the world are honoured to deliver goods to the famously-cantankerous White House. From the Evil Empire of Germany to the Southern Border of Mexico, armoured car guard service is employed to ensure the safety of US voters with foods that are requested.

The White House’s Turf Car Service (TCS) is a highly-specialised body of highly-trained, highly-fastidious individuals who travel to and from the Obama White House three times per day. These men and women — it is almost always men — are comprised of professionals from the private sector, are always armed with their own means of protection (including a wide array of weapons) and are at the beck and call of the US State Department.

On any given day, at any given time, the TCS travels to and from the White House from the following locations, provided via:

Arlington Cemetery, Virginia

National Cathedral, Washington, DC

The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC

Capitol Hill, Washington, DC

The White House itself

As outlined in a video of the White House’s Turf Car Service (TCS), here’s how it works — and how the presidential motorcade vehicles are different from the ones you are used to seeing on American streets.

SORTXL With License Code

SORTXL is a FORTRAN 77 type text program intended to be run from the DOS command line by typing “SORTXL filename”.
The filenames of the input and output files are specified. These files may have any name, may be much larger than main memory, and may be on different drives.
SORTXL will sort input files by any one or more of up to 8 fields. The fields may be specified in any order, ascending or descending. There may be any number of fields on any line.
Unlike SORT, SORTXL cannot read files larger than the hard disk drive; these files must be transferred to main memory for processing.
SORTXL gives other commands in addition to SORTXL (e.g., UNSORTXL, UNSORT). See SORTXL Reference for more details.
SORTXL Usage:
SORTXL
filename1 filename2… filenamen

If N is 1, SORTXL reads input files on disk, sorting the input files into ascending and descending order.
If N is greater than 1, SORTXL reads input files on disk, sorting the input files into ascending order.
If N is not specified, SORTXL reads input files on disk, sorting the input files into ascending order.
When SORTXL sorts the input files into descending order, the output files are named filename.asc filename.desc… filename.ascfilename.desc
Note that in the first output file, the input file names are in reversed order.
SORTXL is intended to replace the use of DOS utilities such as DOS SORT and SORT.EXE for sorting ASCII files. SORTXL provides the ability to sort large files by more than one criterion. SORTXL is also faster than SORT.EXE (and requires less memory). SORTXL does not require knowledge of the DOS program name, location, or path. It does not require changes to standard DOS menus and can be run as easily from the DOS command line as from the DOS application menu.

Requirements:
DOS 3.3 or better.
SORTXL may be run from the DOS command line.
The filenames of the input and output files are specified. These files may have any name, may be much larger than main memory, and may be on different drives.

Commands:
UNSORTXLfilename
UNSORTXL – or –
filename (filename.asc filename.desc

What’s New in the SORTXL?

SORTXL is developed and tested on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It was developed to handle large amounts of data in a short time frame. While it may be written to run under any DOS system, the author has used it as his daily drive for the last 2.5 years without any problems.
It has been tested on many different types of files – indexed, unindexed, indexed with free and free-form ODS files, ASC/DESC, ASCII/Unicode – and each data type handled very well.
It is stable, portable, free and fast.
SORTXL is the first sort app to allow the user to specify on the command line which line is the desired sort criteria. This is important when the user does not have space in which to specify all sort criteria or if the user doesn’t know how many criteria is to be used.
SORTXL also allows the user to specify the last-used criteria on the command line. This allows the user to sort by only the criteria he/she used before to see the actual data.
The sorting algorithm used by SORTXL is a special modified version of SORT.EXE (the Microsoft DOS Sort Program) with two modifications. First, the sorting algorithm is an integer sort, and second, the parameter space for the algorithm is a char space. This algorithm works better than any other sort by a factor of 3 to 5 times faster than the standard SORT.EXE sort.
SORTXL Features:
ASCII, Unicode, mixed index/free-form ODS files, large sort lengths, merge files
DESCENDING, ASCENDING, or no sort order (default)
Sorting of files on the command line
Sort only lines with a specific character (sort by line)
Sort all lines with a specific character
Sort data on the command line
Set the last-used criterion
No input file required
Confirmations
Compare program
Output file type: ASC/DEC, separate or merged
Support for ASCII and Unicode files
Pascal keywords for sorting
Sort by lines, fields, size
Explicit sort order specification (ASC/DESC, including case-sensitivity)
ASCII/Unicode byte-by-byte sorting for ASCII/Unicode files
Sort by character codes
