WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. national security adviser said on Wednesday the United States would not support military intervention in Venezuela, a month after a top official called for the “immediate restoration” of Nicolas Maduro’s presidency.

John Bolton, national security adviser to President Donald Trump, was speaking on the sidelines of meetings in the United States and elsewhere in South America on issues ranging from Iran to Venezuela.

“Look, I’m not going to go down the road of predicting what our policy will be in Venezuela,” Bolton told reporters, adding that Bolton had “no indication of what the policy is” of the United States government toward Venezuela.

“We don’t see military intervention as a viable way to resolve the situation,” he said.

Bolton said it was important that Venezuela’s problems be resolved through dialogue.

He added that the “only thing I can say right now” about the Trump administration’s policy on Venezuela “is that we’re committed to maintaining the integrity of the democratically-elected government of President Maduro.”

In August, Bolton said the time had come for the “immediate restoration” of democratic rule in Venezuela.
